Chicago/Bronzeville — A statue of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar was unveiled at Dunbar Park in Chicago. The statue was created by sculptor Debra Hand. Hand is a renowned artist whose work can be found in prestigious and historic collections such as that of the DuSable Museum and the Smithsonian Institute.

In the 6-foot-tall bronze statue, Dunbar clasps his first book, “Oak and Ivy,” while radiating a stoic look down from the marble pedestal. “There’s a slight sternness, but not dictatorial,” Hand said. Chicago park district officials and local politicians were in attendance.
